Renovations at the Sahabat Anak Secretariat

The original entrance to the Sahabat Anak secretariat before renovations started.

In the last couple of months Sahabat Anak’s secretariat and Children’s Activity Centre (Pusat Kegiatan Anak – PKA) has been undergoing some serious renovations. This house has been an important part of Sahabat Anak’s history as it has seen the formation and development of the Sahabat Anak community over the years. It was here, in 1997, that the first Sahabat Anak Jamboree was organised.

This house is the head office of Sahabat Anak and the Children’s Activity Centre, unfortunately over time the house has become very run down and the roof and second floor became very unstable. This was seriously disrupting the students classes at the Children’s Activity Centre. The only way forward was to renovate the entire building. Even though we needed a significant amount of funding to complete this project we decided to be optimistic and hope in the support of our friends and donors. So far the construction work is progressing really well. And with the wet season soon to be upon us the builders are trying to get as much done as soon as possible!

People’s generosity has been amazing and it looks like at this stage the building will be completed by March 2012. Currently we are renting another house for the Secretariat and Children’s Activity Centre and the lease will expire at the end of March. So by the end of March we will have to move into the new building! It will be wonderful to have a newly renovated house where we can provide a safe and secure learning environment for the students at the Children’s Activity Centre.

About Sahabat Anak

Sahabat Anak is a non-profit organisation that provides quality education and children’s rights advocacy in an effort to encourage and inspire Jakarta’s street children to escape urban poverty. The movement began in 1997 after a group of university students made a commitment to make a difference in the lives of Indonesia's street children. As a volunteer-based organisation, Sahabat Anak aims to involve as many members of the community as possible to help improve the lives of street children.
