Decorating Prumpung’s Reading House
Hurray! A double story house has recently been rented by SA Prumpung and has been converted into a Reading House for the children. All of the books owned by SA Prumpung, a majority of which were donated by our loving friends, have been moved to the second story of the new house. Despite the limited size of the house, it is still big enough to meet the children’s reading needs.
There were some renovations that needed to take place to fulfill safety requirements. So far, some of the renovations that have been made are patching up the floors with thick plywood and carpeting, getting rid of the nails from the walls and repainting the house. We also plan to improve the lighting and strengthen the railings on the staircase.
On Sunday 1st April 2012, seven volunteers and six students from art class gathered at the house to repaint the walls on the first floor and patch the floor up on the second level.
Vina, the painting coordinator, began the project by holding a small meeting to decide on the concepts and drawings. The volunteers and children came up with brilliant ideas and in the end a concept was decided on and the tasks were divided up. With high spirits and hard work everyone finished their tasks. Meanwhile Rama led the renovations on the second floor of patching up the floor and laying down carper with Sofian, Jayadi and Matroji.
Without delaying and complaining, everyone put on their masks, took their brushes and started painting. Everyone was joking and laughing despite having paint stains everywhere. We took a lunch break and took a breath of fresh air while snacking before continuing our work. Time passed quickly and before we knew it, it was afternoon and the renovations were complete.
It is amazing how in one day, with determination and teamwork, the Sahabat Anak Reading House was magically transformed into a beautiful house. One of the children said, “Wow, this is house surgery.” Everyone involved should feel proud of all the hard work they had done. Everyone did their work whole heartedly because everyone worked together and shared the same wish – to make the Reading House a place loved by the children at SA Prumpung.
