“Helping the community: Giving back to those in need by supporting Sahabat Anak”
Inspired by the Ice Bucket Challenge, where people raised a lot of money for charity in the UK and US last year, the Grade 6 teachers of Jakarta International Korean School (JIKS) thought it would be a good idea if the JIKS elementary school could also do some work to help an Indonesian charity. Many of the other independent schools in Jakarta are involved in this sort of work and we felt that it would be a good thing if we too could show some care for our host country. After a lot of research, we decided to try to help Sahabat Anak (A child’s best friend) (http://www.sahabatanak.org).
Sahabat Anak is a non-governmental organization that exists to try to provide an education to street children in Jakarta. The circumstances of the children are very different from those of the JIKS students. Even though these children seem to have nothing, they understand the importance of an education as being the only way that they can change their lives and perhaps the only way that they will be able to get a job.
The value of this programme to JIKS students is that we hope to pass on values of generosity and caring for others; a sense of social responsibility; an understanding of the nature of poverty; the value of education as a way of escaping poverty; the importance of being good guests in a foreign country; the importance of treating others with dignity, respect and as equals and an experience of the phenomenon of charitable giving, which is very common in many countries. There are also strong lessons about teamwork, and how, when they work together, children can be an enormous power for good. JIKS can also be seen as a school which does not only give children a good academic education, but also one which helps to develop good values and character.
The school captains and class captains from grades 5 and 6 were able to visit one of Sahabat Anak’s centres earlier this year, to meet students and staff from Sahabat Anak and to see how very different their school is to JIKS.
One of the things which attracted us to Sahabat Anak was that they do not ask for money, but rather things that they need. Last year, thanks to the kindness, hard work and generosity of the JIKS community, we collected clothes, books, sporting equipment, toys, learning games and musical instruments.
This year, we are trying to do more. In semester one, we had a charity fun day, on the 26th of June, as a fundraiser. Students from Grades 4, 5 and 6 each performed an activity and in return for this, asked their parents, families and friends to donate money for Sahabat Anak.
We hope to raise enough money to try to buy things that Sahabat Anak needs, such as musical and sporting equipment, food for the children, basic necessities, such as cleaning equipment and hopefully some equipment to help with computing. Sahabat Anak compiled a wish list for us, and the things they have asked for were all very humble. In semester two, we will collect things for them again, try to have a garage / bake / jumble sale and try to develop our friendship with them further.
Everything we are doing is really to make a positive difference in the lives of some marginalized children who understand that education is the key to changing their futures.

Words from the JIKS students:
The JIKS class captains and school captains visited the Sahabat Anak school in Jl. Tambak on April 15th 2015. We visited so that we could meet the children and staff from Sahabat Anak and also see the school and facilities. We have been supporting Sahabat Anak now for two years and this was the first time we have been able to visit.
It was very interesting for us to see the school and to see how different it is to our school. We were able to see the different projects and activities that the students were working on. The Sahabat Anak students sang the Indonesian National Anthem and we sang the Korean one. We shared a nice meal of chicken, rice and vegetable soup together. After we came back to JIKS, we were able to show our classmates the many photographs that we had taken and tell them of our experiences.
Visiting Sahabat Anak and meeting with the students and staff has helped us to understand each other better and helped to inspire us to do our very best to support Sahabat Anak and the work that they do.

Di Indonesia banyak anak kecil hidup di jalanan. Sahabat Anak tim Indonesia membantu anak-anak itu. Tapi, Sahabat Anak masih tetap perlu dibantu.
